McDonald, K, Week 1

Hello and welcome to my blog! Before I get started, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a New England native but found my way down to North Carolina for about six years before I returned north for boarding school and college. Throughout my childhood and years of schooling I gained a love for sports. I played hockey for sixteen years and lacrosse for ten before I hung up the equipment for the last time. Other than sports, one of the things I am most passionate about is traveling. I have been to ten different countries but dream of traveling the world one day. I love traveling because I love nature, I love exploring new places, and I love learning about different people. Marketing is an industry where learning about people is part of the job and that is how I found my way to this class and this career path.

This first week of class has been an experience and it only makes me more excited for the rest of the term. The week started out with a few guest presenters, Matthew H. and Professor Kelly, who talked to us about the entertainment industry and marketing of the arts. They each shared some very insightful information which gave the class an inside look at what it is like to work in that industry. They noted that it is a hard life and it requires a passion for the industry that only some people have. They also outlined the four P's of marketing in the entertainment industry and highlighted how they may differ from other industries. This part of each talk was extremely engaging because industries like retail are industries that we, as students, are all familiar with, so it was easy to relate and understand the entertainment industry that much more. After gaining knowledge from the guest presenters, we were able to see it in action as we traveled to the Clemens Center on April 27th.

The Clemens Center, located in Elmira, New York, is a theatre venue and it was the location of our class that day. We toured the theatre, including the stage and dressing rooms, and learned all the ins and outs of the theatre and promotion business. We talked with the Executive Director, Karen C., and she ran us through the specifics of the marketing projects she is currently working on. During this experiential learning trip we were able to apply our knowledge and see what we learned in action. This was an incredible experience and I look forward to our future experiential learning trips and the memories that will be made during them.

Continuing on our stream of entertainment industry learning, we read sections of three books: The Definitive Guide to Entertainment Marketing by Lieberman and Esgate, Entertainment Industry by Mark Vinet, and Why We Play by Yasmeen Sharara. These sections gave us an integral introduction to the material we will be discussing all term. It also deepened our knowledge base and stretched our thinking. I enjoyed reading these books and discussing them in class. Why We Play by Yasmeen Sharara is the book that I relate most to because of the demographic of the author and who the book is written for. This book does express a little bit of bias but it is interesting nonetheless. I recommend all three books as they are all very informative and interesting.

As you've read, this week was focused on the entertainment industry and performing arts marketing. We learned from guest speakers, experienced learning first hand at the Clemens Center, and started reading our books which allowed us to get deeper into the material. Overall the week was memorable and it got me excited for the rest of the term. Make sure to check back next week and keep up with all of our experiences! Ciao!

Stamp, B, Week 1

Hello. Welcome to my Elmira College, Term 3 Blog.
My Name is Brian Stamp '18. I'm a business administration major. In addition college I work at an area restaurant an occasionally at my family's winery Lakewood Vineyards.

I'm Currently taking Entertainment, Media, and Sports Marketing: An Experiential Learning Experience with Professor Allyson Wolfe. Over the course of the class, we will tour various organizations, have discussions with marketing staff, and hear from guest speakers.

The first day of class we learned how to use the blogger.com website with Joe Fahs (Director of Academic Technology and User Services at Elmira College) and discussed what entertainment marketing entails.

On day 2 we had a Matthew H. Ph.D. as a guest speaker. His lecture about event promotion was enthralling. In addition to his promotion business Matthew owns several commercial properties, 4 Subway restaurants, and a cleaning business franchise. I found his story about clawing himself out of poverty to be very motivational.

The third day the class was treated to a lecture by Professor John Kelley of Elmira College. Professor Kelley spoke about theatrical performances, as well as the marketing of shows on Broadway. I can't say that I'm a huge fan of theater, but I found his presentation to be very interesting.

The intellectual property attorney that was scheduled to speak on Thursday had to cancel. I was kind of bummed about that because I was excited to hear his perspective on the current situation involving intellectual property theft in China.

Our first field trip occurred on Friday when we were able to visit the Clemens Center in Elmira, New York. We were given a tour of the beautiful and historic theater. After touring the dressing rooms and  backstage area, we were able to talk to Karen C. (the Executive Director of the Clemens Center). She lead an in-depth discussion about the challenges of running a non-profit theater and the marketing efforts that it requires. I thought it was particularly interesting that the organization had an issue reaching some of their subscribers because those individuals don't use email.

Olsen, M, Week 1

Hi, welcome to my first blog! My name is Marissa Olsen and I am from Long Island. I am currently a junior at Elmira College in the class of 2019. I am a Business Administration major with a concentration in Marketing.  I am also on the Nationally Ranked Competitive Cheerleading Team here at Elmira College. I am a Branch Office Administrator at Edward Jones, a financial consult corporation, and the Social Media Coordinator for the Elmira College Cheerleading team.

This term 3 I am taking a class called, "Entertainment, Media, and Sports Marketing: An Experiential Learning Experience." Within this course, we will be learning about all aspects of marketing within the entertainment, art, media, and sports world. Throughout the extent of this class, I will be posting weekly blogs about what we have done in our class including our field trips, discussions and experiences.

This week we had two guest speakers and a field trip. The first guest speaker that we had was Dr. Matthew Hufnagel, who is a serial entrepreneur. He owns 4 subways, 4 commercial buildings, Clean and Green; a carpet cleaning business, a promotion business, apartment buildings, teaches classes online and at Corning Community College, ran a minor league hockey and baseball team, and has put on 47 shows all over the country in 9 weeks. His presentation to us was very powerful in my opinion just because he isn't afraid to risk it all which I find to be very admirable when it comes to doing what you love in life, which he is!

"You don’t need money to make money. It’s just excuses and a lack of confidence." - Dr. Hufnagel

The second guest speaker we had was Professor John Kelly, who spoke to us about marketing the theater and arts. Within Professor Kelly’s presentation he spoke about how when marketing the theater, you must do market research in order to know what crowds are around you and who/how to market the upcoming productions. There is a lot of research that must be done in order to calculate ticket prices based off of income, complication of the performance if not an educated area, age, gender, race, and if there are any large corporations around that would want to buy tickets for their employees. He also said that word of mouth is extremely important so that the show will be spoken about and spread around.

“Opening night needs to be really good, so people tell their friends about it and then more people will come. Or if it’s really bad tell your enemies!” - Professor John Kelly

To wrap up our week, on Friday, we had the opportunity to have a tour of the Clemens Center by Karen Cromer, who is the Executive Director of the Clemens Center. Karen went over some of the ins and outs of marketing the theater and how difficult it can be to market the plays to the surrounding areas and to the targeted audiences.

Keisler, D, Week 1

The first week of Entertainment, Media, and Sports marketing was action packed. There where two guest speakers that came in to talk to our class. On Friday we took a trip to the Clemens Center in downtown Elmira. The first guest speaker was Mr. Matthew Hufnagel. He is a seriel entreprenuer, who works in the arena marketing business. The second guest speaker was Professor John Kelly who is the head of Theatre program at Elmira College. The trip to the Clemens Center was a very interesting experience. Ms. Karen Cromer who is the exective director at the Clemens Center gave us a tour of the facility and gave us an inside scoop on the marketing aspect. It was very interesting to learn about how these places get to show Broadway musicals.

Rosen, A, Week 1

Welcome to my first blog post for MKT 3915, Entertainment, Media, and Sports Marketing: An Experiential Learning Experience. My name is Alex Rosen, and I'm a junior economics and business administration double major here at Elmira College. In addition to my studies, I'm also a member of the EC Men's basketball team and have many other passions, most of which have to do with sports. Although I play basketball at the collegiate level, my favorite sport is actually baseball and I plan to pursue a position within the sport upon my graduation next June.

Currently, I'm a writer for Baseball Prospectus, where I cover the New York Mets and the organizations minor league system. My position at BP Mets allows me a media credential, which means I'm allowed field and locker room access pre and post game, as well as a seat in the press box. I'm responsible for the vast majority of our minor league prospect coverage and report directly to the lead prospect writer for Baseball Prospectus, Jeffery Paternostro. I also write articles about the major league team and write a game recap for every Saturday Mets game. In addition to my work at BP, I am also the co-director of amateur scouting for the rSt. Louis Cardinals of the VBL. The VBL, short for the Virtual Baseball League, is a new startup fantasy league that is much more immersive and challenging than any fantasy league that's come before it. The league sold all 30 of it's teams this off-season, with the cheapest going for around $5,000 and the most expensive being $20,000. The league was created to allow fans with professional sport ownership aspirations to realize their dreams, as well as provide those who wish to work in professional baseball front offices' a chance to hone their skills. As co-director of amateur scouting, I'm responsible for overseeing our organizations efforts for the rMLB First Year Player Draft.

This summer, I will be interning with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League. The Cape Cod League is far and away the best summer collegiate baseball league there is, as evidenced by the 253 alumni that were drafted in the 2017 MLB First Year Player Draft, which includes 10 first-round picks. I'll be working as a writer for the team, responsible for game recaps and feature articles on our team's top prospects, as well as some social media promoting. There will be thousands of major league scouts and executives in attendance at our team's games this summer, and I'm really looking forward to networking with them to soak up as much information as possible. I'll also be creating relationships that I'll use in my pursuit of a position with an organization once I graduate next year.

Our first week of class was action-packed: we learned how to get started on our blogs, listened to two guest presenters, and took a field trip to the Clemens Center. My favorite part of our first week was undoubtedly listening to Dr. Hufnagel, a wildly successful entrepreneur who has a passion for sports marketing. Dr. Hufnagel shared his knowledge in the field as well as advice for all of us in our future endeavors. I really enjoyed his stories and his presentation, and his advice was inspiring to us all. I also enjoyed our visit to the Clemens Center, as I was surprised by how nice it is in the building, as well as the quality of the entertainment that they have year round. Our visit inspired me to think about actually attending one of the many productions put on at the Clemens Center!

Our second week starts with facilitations by my classmates and includes a field trip to Corning Museum of glass, as well as a guest presenter, Paul Burke, who will talk to us about intellectual property rights in the entertainment industry. I'm really looking forward to it!

Blais, R, Week 1

Hello, my name is Ryan Blais and I am currently a freshman at Elmira College. I major in Business Administration with aspirations of minoring in Finance. During term III at Elmira College I am taking a class called "Entertainment, Media, and Sports Marketing" which covers three important types of marketing and how they work. At Elmira College I play both hockey and golf, which is a key reason why this class drew my attention. Throughout term III I will be posting weekly blogs that cover important topics that happened in class or on field trips during that given week.
During the first week of class, we covered the syllabus and expectations that are required to be
successful in this class. I look forward to future field trips and guest speakers throughout the course!

Thank you for reading my first post!

Gillam, C, Week 1

Hello,

My name is Caroline Gillam. I am a freshman at Elmira College and will be majoring in accounting with a concentration in marketing. I am from Queensbury, New York, which is near Lake George, New York. I love living near the Adirondacks because there are opportunities for adventure throughout all the seasons. As my freshman year is coming to an end, I am so grateful for the friendships and opportunities I have had at Elmira College. I continue to be actively involved on campus in various clubs as well as volunteering throughout the community. Next year I will be a Resident Assistant, which will help me develop my leadership skills. Sports marketing is such a new and exciting career to look into. Upon graduating from Elmira College, I hope to find a job in the sports marketing world. For the next four weeks I will be writing blogs on my reflections/experiences from each week.

On Friday, our class had the opportunity to visit the Clemens Center. Karen C, who is the Executive Director of the Clemens Center gave us background knowledge/ history of the Clemens Center and then showed us the theatre. After having a tour, Karen sat down and talked to our class about her role as the Executive Director of the Clemens Center. Over this time period, Karen went over the four P's in her role and explained how she markets shows/ events at the Clemens Center. The four P's include; promotion, place, price, and product. Each of these four P's play an important role throughout the marketing process. I really enjoyed this opportunity as it was an experiential learning experience for me.

This first week provided me insight into how marketing entertainment is applied in the real world. "Marketing the Arts" was very intriguing to me and I hope to further my knowledge and experience in this area.

Cuffee, H

Hello, my name is Henry Cuffee III and I am a junior at Elmira College. I am a Business Administration major with specializations in Marketing and Management and a minor in Finance. Throughout the duration of this course, I will be posting weekly blogs about our class                       experiences with our discussions and field trips.
Clemens Center, Elmira, NY
This week, we had two guest speakers come in and speak with us about entertainment marketing. The first guest speaker was Dr. Matthew Hufnagel and the second was Professor John Kelly. To finish off the week we visited the Clemens Center in downtown Elmira and we discussed the                                          business of entertainment theater and how                                          vital it is to use good marketing plans to                                            promote shows. The trip was very essential                                        to our learning, as some kids in the class                                            plan to go into entertainment marketing in                                          the future.

In the first week we had two guest speakers and also traveled to the Clemens Center in downtown Elmira. Mathew Hufnagel came into our class to speak about his time in sports marketing as well as his experiences being a promoter and entrepreneur. Professor John Kelly came in to speak with the class about marketing the arts. After the days of guest speakers we went on our trip to the Clemens Center to get a tour and learn about business associated with theatre and history. The trip was educating for people who know little about how theatre is marketed.

The photo above describes who I am pretty well, celebrating a goal I scored with so much passion and excitement.

Briefly going over this week in class we learned a lot about the theatre aspect of entertainment marketing. We met with some pretty interesting people like Dr. Matthew Hufnagel and Professor John Kelly. Then we toured the Clemons Center with Karen Cromer.

Dr. Matthew Hufnagel was my personal favorite when he came and talked about what he does in his entrepreneur career. The way he spoke was so passionate and really grabbed my attention. Dr. Hufanagel owns many of his own businesses, including four subways, cleaning companies, and entertainment company. You can say he does well for himself.

Karen Cromer was another successful person in the entertainment working world. . Karen Cromer did a wonderful job with showing up around the theatre and explaining all of the hard work that goes into the shows. She told us how much time and effort goes into a production. They market their business by putting on shows for the people that want to come.

The reading aspect of this week in class all tied into the professionals we had the pleasure of meeting and learning from.

I am excited for the rest of the term and continuing to learn from so many people.

Thank you for checking in!

This weeks guest speakers were a great experience and opportunity to learn how sports and entertainment ties into marketing.

Our first guest speaker Mr. Matthew Hufnagle, a serial entrepreneur shared his success and key factors that go into the marketing industry. Here are some of the key take aways I gathered:
  • The industry is Value Based
  • Social networking is key to success
  • The need to be creative
  • Society lives in a world of "now" and in order to make a profit people need to have patients and learn that failure will only lead to more success
  • Highlighted on the idea of "Back to the Basics"
Transitioning into Wednesdays guest speaker Professor John Kelly, discussed his experience in the entertainment field and what role marketing portrays in entertainment such as movies, theaters and things of that aspect. Here are some key factors:
  • How does entertainment relate to marketing from the actor standpoint? The need to market yourself
    • be able to sell your talent and ability
  • Four P's
    • Product- entertainment, actors, mission statement
    • Price- advertisements, ticket prices, hiring, rent, production costs
    • Promotion- ads, newspaper, email, discounts
    • Place- theater, location of product
  • Marketing environment- potential audience, proximity of competition, economy, media, local climate/attitudes
  • Internal Environment- mission/objectives
    • Market research and target market to achieve that mission or goal

Furthermore, on Friday, the class was able to experience the opportunity to visit the Clemens Center; a concert and theatre center. When arriving Karen Cromer;Executive Director of the Clemens Center, gave us a tour explaining the background and history of the Clemens Center.
  • One of the oldest theatres left in Elmira
  • Survived the big flood
  • Redone in the 1970s, but efforts to try and keep all the original design
After the tour, Ms. Cromer explained how marketing relates to her occupation and the theatre. Since theatre is a dying past time, it is hard to bring in audience to sell the productions. This is where Ms. Cromer comes in and finds the right way to market the shows and make sure there is success in this industry.

Overall this week has been a learning experience that has allowed only a small surface to be scratched into the marketing industry. Continuing on with the rest of the term is something I am looking forward to and can not wait to apply what I have learned into the workforce and my future success!

For anyone interested in additional information on entertainment and media marketing feel free to check out this explanation video!

Until next week!

Serrano, J

Hello, Its me Joel Serrano welcome to my first
Photo of Joel Serrano III
blog post! I will be writing about the Entertainment, Media, and Sports Marketing class, giving a weekly update on what I learned and what should be taken away from in-class discussions and other experiential learning within this course.
Know here are some bullet points about me!

     I am...

  •  A Freshmen at Elmira College
  •  Born in NYC and raised in New Rochelle, NY
  • I am Majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing
  •  I am apart of Enactus

This past week we discussed events promotion in sports
& entertainment. We have had a guest speaker come into
class and the class also went on a field trip to the Clemens
Center gaining experiential learning experience on how the
theater is run and how they market their programs.

One of the most interesting take aways from this week is
learning about promotion and how the entertainment
industry has a unique and fast life cycle were as companies
in this industry try to get their product to last longer then
others. Matthew Hufnagel a serial entrepreneur one of the
classes guest speaker has stated that people should "put
themselves in the position to do what they want to do" this
statement has stuck to me as these companies try to place their
promotion in the right place to attract the most attention to
their target market. I had a great week learning and can't
wait to experience and learn more.

David K. WEEK 5

Hello everyone! This is my last blog for the course. This class has been filled with so many interesting learning experiences. It really has...
